Big Energy Week started on the 16th of January 2012 and will be running till the 21st of January the project is being ran by the Citizens Advice Bureaux and a number of consumer groups, energy companies and Government bodies. The idea is to help people who don’t know that help is available.
On the website www.bigenergyweek.org.uk you can get your hands on plenty of advice about how to cut your energy bills, there’s some helpful phone numbers and links as well as a guide about what’s happening in your area.
Big Energy Week is trying to help people save money on their energy bills by encouraging action and showing them how:
• Contact your energy supplier to confirm you are on the best tariff and payment method for you. A monthly direct debit works out about £100 cheaper per year than paying by cash or cheque.
• In some cases you can save nearly £200 on your annual bill by switching supplier, particularly if you have never changed energy firm.
• By Insulating the walls and loft of your home you could save on average around £120 per year. Also all the major energy providers are giving away free or well discounted insulation to any household, not just their own customers. So just wire in and ask if you’re eligible so you don’t miss out.
• Check you are receiving all the benefits and tax credits you are entitled to that could up your income; your local Citizens Advice Bureaux can help you with this.
• It can be quite easy to use less energy and save more money, just by doing the simplest things like turn off lights you’re not using and not leaving appliances on standby. Turning your thermostat down 1°C alone could cut your heating bill by £60 on average.
• If you find you are unable to pay your energy bills you need to contact your energy supplier immediately as they are required to help you manage your bills in a manageable way that you are able to afford.
• If you use heating oil or LPG Gas to heat your home, it’s a great idea to shop around different suppliers and make sure you have a good deal. You could also save quite a bit of money by buying in bulk with your neighbours; check if there is an oil club in the local community you can join or why not start one up.
These are just some of the tips available during the big energy week, have you got any to add?
