I thought we’d have a bit of fun today, as I stumbled across this great little cartoon about saving energy at home. It’s about a family that are wasting energy and then lo and behold something happens to make them change there ways…. Dun dun dun.

Earlier this month SSE were again awarded top spot in the Consumer Focus complaints league table achieving their first and the only 5 star rating in the process.
The energy complaints league table is a quarterly study carried out by Scotland’s Consumer Council, Consumer Focus and is decided by calculating the ratio of customer complaints. This most recent table is calculated using data from April to June.
Consumer Focus frequently updates the figures using data gathered not just from there own sources, but they also pull in data from Consumer Direct and the Energy Ombudsman. The table is generally decided by comparing the amount of complaints received to market share, each complaint is also given a weighting depending on how serious it is.
Overall this last quarter was quite positive for the big 6 with a decrease in complaints across the board. But SSE will be particularly pleased after not only remaining on top, but achieving the coveted 5 star rating must be the icing on the cake.
SSE’s Director of Customer Services was quoted “We are extremely proud to be the only energy company to achieve the five star rating and we take the relationship we have with our customers very seriously…We are determined to build on this and improve our service even further so that it will set us apart from our competitors as we prepare for the energy market of tomorrow.”
The SSE name encompasses all of the smaller energy business’ such as Scottish Hydro, Southern Electric, Atlantic and Swalec and given their combined success in customer service it does appear that they are committed to staying on top and doing their best for the customer.

Green energy for the home is now being introduced to those in social housing through new plans unveiled by the Government this year. The plans will give tenants access to greener forms of heating like wood solar powered hot water systems, wood fired boilers and heat pumps.
It is believed these new plans will not only save households money but also help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The initiative will be financed by a £3m fund for social housing which has been secured from the larger £860m renewable energy fund.
The Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change Greg Barker, was quoted: “Improving and greening Britain’s homes must make strong financial sense if we are to provide a real sustainable alternative to expensive old heating systems. If people choose to go green, they want to see real savings, this will drive the take up of new heating technologies in social housing and help slash their dependence on big energy companies and expensive tariffs.”
The main aims of the scheme is to try and reduce fuel poverty as some households are spending more than 10% of their budget on heating an also to help stimulate the further development of renewable heating technologies.
British families have been hit hard by this years rise in energy bills most being 18% or more. The energy companies are blaming a rise in wholesale energy costs caused by international events like an increase in demand from developing nations and disruptions to the supply from the Middle East.
Within the new scheme registered providers of social housing will be advised to apply to the Energy Saving Trust, they are the government funded body in charge of the £3m kitty. The housing providers will be required bid for a share of the pot. Once all the bids are in funds shall be issued around early October.
At the moment approximately 50% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions stem from heating buildings, yet there has been little done to try and cut these emissions. The renewable heat incentive is expected to help reduce the emissions by nearly 4.5m tonnes of carbon a year.
Residents involved will also be advised to accept insulation for their home, the insulation shall be offered with no initial payments near the end of 2012 as part of the deal. So instead of the upfront payments residents shall receive loans that shall be paid back in instalments through household energy bills.
